Special Exhibition "Jomon in Chatan" - The Beginning of Exchange

The Chatan Town Museum is currently hosting a special exhibition, "Chatan's Jomon - The Beginning of Exchange," focusing on the Jomon culture of Kyushu, which fascinated the people of Okinawa thousands of years ago.

Introduction

Many Jomon period ruins have been discovered in Chatan Town, including the Irehara Ruins (a nationally designated historic site).

The circle of exchange with people from outside the prefecture began with exchanges with people from Kyushu during the Jomon period (approximately 7,000 to 5,500 years ago), and gradually spread to the northern regions of the Japanese archipelago as time passed.

This special exhibition focuses on the beginning of exchange, showcasing the situation before and after the start of this exchange, focusing on the Jomon culture fostered by the people of Kyushu with whom the people of Okinawa interacted.

The event will run from Saturday, November 1, 2025 to Sunday, February 8, 2026.

Lectures and courses are also planned for the period.

Admission to the exhibition and related events is free of charge.

This is a rare opportunity to see all the precious items excavated from all over Kyushu in one place.

Please feel free to drop by when you are sightseeing in Chatan.
